Debuts in Singapore

Hong Kong acclaimed ceramic artist Leo Wong debuts his solo exhibition in Singapore, featuring a stunning floral ceramic art installation to celebrate the vitality and spontaneity of the natural world. In collaboration with The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, Leo will transform the hotel’s East Garden Gallery into a colourful and whimsical garden with his life-like floral ceramic sculptures. Leo’s enchanting art creations strive to capture the elusive moments of life in nature and preserve the fleeting state of flowers using ceramics., inviting viewers to wander into the artistic Garden by the Clay to start an immersive dialogue with flowers.

Featuring over 50 porcelain flowers, the creative process took over 300 hours to translate design into reality. A colourful floral cluster spanning 3 metres has been crafted to represent horticultural treasures, including yellow, peach, pink, and red herbaceous peony varieties. Apart from his emblematic peony collection, Leo will also feature other ravishing flowers such as dahlias, tulips, poppies and more using porcelain in different colours, showcasing his interpretation of The Fullerton Hotel Singapore’s 2023 festive celebrations, Christmas in Colours.

Botanicals, Art, History

More than just an exhibition, the art installation tells a story of the poetic relationship between plants, art, and history. Ceramics is an age-old art form with a storied history, having symbolised Oriental character and beauty for thousands of years. Leo’s creations are known for their original and distinctive design – characterised by sophistication, and delicacy. Leo’s works explore the plasticity and characteristics of fine porcelain and bring a fresh aesthetic of lightness and grace to modern ceramic art. As the viewer steps into the historic Fullerton Building, the artist invites them to discover the forgotten history of ceramics and ruminate on the myriad possibilities that the union between traditional ceramics and modern crafting techniques brings forth.

 

 

About the Artist – Leo Wong

Born and raised in Hong Kong (b. 1981), with a bachelor’s and master’s Degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Before foray into ceramic arts, Leo obtained Certified Arborist qualification in Singapore and become a a landscape designer specialized in vegetation management. Leo currently resides and works in Hong Kong. He has lived in Switzerland (Geneva) and Singapore and participated in various exhibitions across Europe and Asia.

Leo’s knowledge of flowers and botanicals was cultivated from his studies and career for over 20 years. His creation of life-like floral ceramic sculptures and art installation is a tribute to his passion for botany. Leo recently received the third runner-up of The Hari Art Prize 2023, and the award-winning artwork is in exhibition in The Hari Hotel Hong Kong.

Enchanting and lifelike, Leo’s floral sculpture was famously collected by Van Cleef & Arpels, Chanel, The Peninsula Hong Kong and Netherlands Consulate-General in Hong Kong. Though most of his artworks are commissioned, they are also sold at Hong Kong M+ Museum and Lane Crawford (a world leading luxury department store found in 1850 in Hong Kong).

 

About The Fullerton Hotel Singapore

The magnificent Fullerton Building is a grand neoclassical landmark built in 1928. Gazetted in December 2015 as a National Monument, it was once home to Singapore’s General Post Office, the Exchange, Chamber of Commerce, and the prestigious Singapore Club. For nearly a century, it played a pivotal role in Singapore’s rich history. Today, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore has been transformed into a stunning 400-room heritage hotel in Singapore.
